I really like seeing creative advertising because it shows that they put more effort into getting the consumers attention. Instead of following everyone else's ideas. I feel like in adverting it is important to be creative. One of the billboard ads I really like is from formula. I use this picture last time from one of my other blog post and thought it would be useful in this post too. The billboard shows people that their product is so strong that you can bit a billboard off. That is how strong it is. Obviously, you can not do that in reality, but it is showing people that it makes your teeth strong in a unique way.

Here comes the typewriter
For the commeral, we thought we would have three scene of a child and a parent. The first scene would be a child using a lead pencil and runs out of lead. The child would be sad and crying because he or she is unable to draw. This is where the mother comes in ad gives the child a regular number two wooden pencil. The child will be happy continue to draw. The second scene would be the teen playing their video games and their game system burns out. This is where the mother comes in and gives the teen a board game to play and the mother and teen would play the board game together. Lastly, this is where the typewriter comes in. The college student would be doing his essay on his laptop and suddenly there is a blackout. The college student freaks out and does not know what to do. The mother comes in with a candle and type writer. The college student will feel relief that they will be able to do his essay.
The Jeep
My group that that we should target the elderly, since they were the ones more fitted for the jeep. When we see a jeep, we see adventure. We thought in the beginning of the commercial we would have the grandparents driving the jeep then dropping off their grand children to school. One of the grand children would ask the other,
"What do you think grandma and grandpa do when they drop us off?"
"I don't know, old people stuff? They probably go home and nap till it's time to pick up us."
"You don't think they have any fun?"
"They probably go golf or fishing."
They would say their good byes and the grandparent would drive away. We thought that we would have two scenes where they would go golfing and fishing. For golfing, they would play golf a bit then start driving their jeeps on the golf course with the other elderly. They would race each other have a lot of fun. For the fishing scene they would ride their jeep in a rocky place because they are trying to get to the fishing area. After they get there, they would park their jeep and go on a crazy boat ride catching finish. Then suddenly they would have their alarm saying it is time to pick up their grand children. They would get to school and act like nothing happen and pick up their grand children.
Nostalgia
Nostalgia advertising usually triggers people memories from the past. It makes them think of the past what the did or a memory that they have not thought of in a while. I think toys are espcially effective, since all of us have been a kid and many of the toys are coming back again. For example, I remember seeing the "elefun" commercial.
This video was made in 2009, and it triggered my memories when i first meet my distant cousin. This was the time when my auntie and uncle were about to gt married and my distant came over to my place and they brought the elefun. We all had a lot of fun running around catching the butterflies. It made me call my distant cousin to see how she was doing after all these years. I can still remember the old elefun commerial because of the song. I found it on youtube and I thought, "wow, this video came out in 1994? I was one years old at that time!"
Interruptive Advertisements
One of the annoying interpretative advertising I can stand is when I watch my TV shows on my iphone. I do not watch television in San Jose because my housemates felt that we did not need to have cable. I was really sad to find out that I was unable to watch my shows anymore. This semester, I finally got a smart phone and I was able to download apps. I usually watch on ABC app.
I am in love with their show, "Once Upon A Time" since I am a big fan of fairy tales. Every Monday ABC would update their episode on their app. I get very excited for the new episodes. I would watch the new episodes before I sleep. The annoying thing is that they have at least 5 ads in one episodes. Sometimes they would take a minute and I end up falling a sleep waiting for it. The next morning I would be sad because I was unable to finish the episode or not remember where I was in the show.
Rose Petal Cottage
In my group, we thought we would change the color of the house besides pastel color such as light pink, light yellow, light blue, and etc.The color of the house would be white and dark blue since its more neutral. We would take away the laundry place and make it into a living room or a bed room. Another thing we would like to add is a garage, so they can ether buy a car or design their own room inside such as tool room or garden shed.
We really did not like the song because of the line, "Taking care of my home is a dream dream dream." We did not like this line because it was saying girl's dream is to stay home and take care of the house. We thought of changing it to, "Having fun in my home on a lovely day."
We wanted the intro to show a boy and a girl opening the door telling people to come in. In the scene where the girl take of the baby, we thought we would have both of them rocking the fake baby to sleep. Instead of baking we thought they would cook eggs together.

Toblerone
In my group we thought of targeting Facebook, Pintrest, and Youtube for our three social media channels. The box will be metallic, gold, sliver, or bronze with a bow like a Christmas gift. There will be three winners and three runner ups. The runner ups will get a holiday gift basket of Toblerone. The three winners will win two tickets to New York City for the holidays. The contest will start on black Friday till Christmas. They will announce the winners on December 27.
Youtube: The costumer has to make a 10-15 second video. Saying, "Happy holidays from Toblerone." It has to be holiday theme. This is like a holiday card.
Pintrest: The costumer finds different ways to use the product in a creative way. An example could be a cake. They can use the chocolate and bake it into a cake. Any use of the chocolate in a creative way in a holiday theme.
Facebook: The costumer takes a picture with the product in a holiday theme. It has to be creative and unique. The person who has the most like will win.

Bug Vaccuum
Scene One: Patty walks spotted a new neighbor and
notices the door open. She walks into the door and sees a lady and says “What a
nice place you have here.”
Scene Two: Patty notices a bug on the wall and gives
it a glare. –Western Music plays-
Scene Three: Patty slowly grabs the bug vacuum,
hoping that the bug does not spot her to attack.
Scene Four: A western city with a ranch and bar in
the background appears. Patty and the bug are 15 feet apart from each other and
a tumbleweed rolls across from him. The western music continues to play and
they give each other eye contact.
Scene Five: Back to the new neighbor’s front door
and patty immanently jumps across the room to vacuum the bug in the bug vacuum.
The bug gets sucked in and the new neighbor is amazed.
Scene Six: Patty smiled joyfully and poses with the
bug vacuum. The new neighbor stares at patty and says, “Did you have that thing
with you all the time?” Patty replies, “You never know when you need a bug
vacuum.”
GOT ETHICS?
I thought the 5th
Annual Spuler Ethics Symposium was interesting, since it was focusing on
Advertising. I went to his event because I wanted to know more about
advertising and see what professionals view in advertising. Also I wanted extra
credit for the class. What I notice was the speakers at the panel had different
backgrounds. It was interesting because they knew the difference type of
advertising internationally.
In
the Jack in the Box commercial, the speakers on the panel said that they
thought ad was bad taste. It was the first time for me to see this ad and I
thought it was interesting how they targeted teens who were smokers. Especially
the last video where all the group of student pretended they were high from
eating the burger. I thought it was very weird that they were using student to
get high from burgers because it was unexpected for a Jack in the Box
commercial. I’m going to be honest, but I seen many people go to Jack in the
Box after they get high. I did not think they would make it public to others.
Another
thing I thought was interesting was the drug company commercial. I have seen
the first commercial on television before. It was the depression pill that
makes people happier. I never notice till Dr. Michael Llewellyn – Williams pointed
out that some people think that they have a problem, when they really don’t
have a problem. Which makes the consumers buy the product because they think
the product will help them. I did not know that only other places did not
advertising drugs.
The
Clutter Crisis was an interesting topic, since people thought that advertising
had power. Sometimes I would relate advertising to Philosophy. I am currently
taking Philosophy and ethic would make me think about my morals. In ways they
are opposite of each other. What really caught my attention was when Dr.
Michael Llewellyn-Williams said, “Thanks for making this product to me available.
Now I’ll make my own decision.” I agree with him because a lot of people think
negatively of advertising because they think that advertising forces them to
buy the product. Advertising tries to influence people to buy their product,
but it has no power to FORCE the people to buy the product. The consumer has
the choice to buy the product. There should be no blame on advertising, since
the consumer decide on themselves to buy the product.

Changes in Gender
I felt like advertising in gender was really big back in the day because women did not have much rights. Even though they did get their rights, people would still look down upon them, since the stereotype of a girl should be weak and stay at home wives. Women were always look down upon because society has taught use that men are the dominate ones.
Looking at this ad, you can see that the male is the dominate one. He is standing on top of the females head. "Its nice to have a girl around the house" This ad a bit wowed me. During this time, I feel that there are still gender ads, but not as much as it did back then. Ladies have been showing that male and women can pretty much the same. Back then people would talk about the man in the house, but nowadays women are the "man" in the house. Gender are more equal compared from before, but I still feel that there are gender ads. Why I say this is because in the business world. People trying their best to find ways to make money. Even if it means being sexist of racist. It's just easier for people to target ads this way.
As you can see that this ad is pretty old. "Keep her where she belongs" When I first saw this as I already knew it was a sexist ad. I believe this is a shoe ad and its telling guys that buying these shoes will keep your girl down. Most girls love shoes, so the best way to keep her down and calm is to spoil them with gift, so they won't fight back. Honestly, the quote made me think that males will tame their girls down. In order to tame their girls is to buy them shoes. Another thing in the photo is that you can tell that she is nude. Maybe saying that if you were to buy her shows, she will listen to your every need even sexually. It's like they are saying that if you buy her shoes, she will stay down and males are the dominate ones.
Racial and Fender Diversity
The television show I will be talking about is "The Suite Life of Zack and Cody". Why I chose this show is because it shows a young white girl who works at the hotel and is poor. She is low income, but works very hard on her job. Her name is Maddie and she is a very bright girl. I thought it was interesting because most stereotype for young white girls would be a rich dumb blonde who does not have to do anything, but have fun. On the other hang there is a young Asian girl name London, who is rich and not very bright. Her father is the owner of the hotel and spoils London. She is able to get whatever she wants and whenever she wants it. Another stereotype is that Asians are suppose to be really smart, but London here isn't so bright at all.
This show is pretty diverse with races, since it is not all about white people. Usually, shows would have white people in majority, but in this show they are very diverse. They have other Disney stars that enter the show like Raven Baxter from That's So Raven. Raven is an African American who is trying to make it in the big picture with her fashion designs. I believe that diversity is important because everyone is different. We should not target on only one race because the audience that watch these shows are diverse.
I'm not sure did they purposely put the London as the dumb rich girl and Maddie as the smart poor girl, but it did open my eyes as a child when I watched this. This show started in 2005 and that was when I was still in elementary school. Even as a child I knew the stereotypes, so it is important to the media, since I realized it as a child. If one child notices this then I'm sure there are more children out there that will realize it too.
Racist Stereotyping
I don't think it is ever right to use racially stereotyping in advertising purposes. It causes a lot of problems and advertising racially stereotypes will encourage the public that it is good to discriminate other races. It's like supporting people to make fun of other races just because its a stereotype.
This is a PSP (PlayStation Portable) from PlayStation. What I see in this ad is a white young lady who is dress in white. She is showing a lot of skin and is very forceful towards the African american guy who is wearing a black button up shirt. You can see that her grip on towards his face is forceful and she looks at him fiercely in the eye. Its has if she has power over him and he is not doing anything about it. I understand that white PlayStation Portable is coming, but they did not had to show that its coming in this way.
Racism is not a thing from the past. It is still going on today because its a easy way to relate towards their audience. I understand that relating towards the audience is important, but there are other ways beside racially stereotyping.
This commercial was really unexpected. When I first saw this commercial, I thought people should judge people from their appearance. A nice man went to get the little girl her balloon, but the man gave her the balloon. The little girl's mother grab her child and ran away. I assume she did that because he was African american. It was so sad, because when he got back home there were more balloons, showing that he help other kids too, but did not get their balloons back. In the end, he lays in his bed and ends up a toothbrush. The man soon turn into chocolate toothpaste. I did not expect the commercial to be a toothpaste ad.
Semiotics
During class, our lecture about semiotics got me very interested. Semiotics shows a lot of symbolism which I really enjoy. I like looking at things at a deeper level. Seeing a imagine and trying to figure its understanding the message is fun. Semiotics is used a lot in advertising since it can attract consumers attention. For example:
This is an ad for Formula the toothpaste brand. As you can see the headline is "builds strong teeth". This billboard is about a man using his teeth to rip the billboard apart. Obviously, a normal human being cannot use their teeth to rip a billboard apart. In the picture, you can see that the metal parts that hold the billboard is coming off. This ad is telling consumers that formula will be very effective if you use their product.
In this ad, you can see that the people in the photo is very high class. They are in a plane drinking SKYY which is vodka. Looking at their surrounding, they have a lot of space that they are able to be comfortable. I would assume that they are flying first class on the plane. They ladies are dressed with a lot of jewelry and the man in the back is in a suit. It seems that SKYY is for the high class audience and portrays that drinking SKYY will give you a good time. Even looking at the bottle, that it is nicely package in a blue glass bottle.
This is a Thai commercial about a green tea drink called "slim". I saw this video long ago and thought this would be a example. I thought the name fit the commercial perfectly, since the video is about a young lady who lost her stomach fat to her breast. I thought it was quiet funny, since the other lady was laughing at her earlier because she had a tummy. The product was not shown, but it is basically saying that if you were to drink"slim" you will be able to lose fat.

Brands
Brands have been around
us for a long time. It seems that brands play a big part in society. It can
show status and has power. I have friends who would buy products just because
the brand is popular. For example, Louis Vuitton is a very expensive brand. I
have seen many people buying their product. I, myself cannot afford to buy one.
I would want one, but they are very expensive. I remember walking into the
store with a friend of mine. He is high class and is use to buying expensive
brands like Louis Vuitton. I wore a sweat shirt and jeans into the store, while
my friend was wearing expensive brand clothing. He wanted to return his wallet
and I followed along. While he was talking to the store keeper, I was walking around
the store looking at the bags. The security guard kept following me and watching
my every move. I felt uncomfortable, so I would walk around the whole store. Soon
enough, one of the employee walked up to me and ask if I needed some help. I told
her that I was fine and looking around. The lady gave me a disgusted look and walked
to the security guard whispering in his ear. They both looked at me and I felt uncomfortable.
I sat down at one of sofas and waited for my friend till we left. I believe that
because of the way I dressed walking in the store they believed that I was about
to steal. Because I was not dressed in fancy brand clothing they kept on watch.
I was also treated rudely from the employees. I still remember everyone in the store
was dress in branded clothing. The ladies would have Prada or Gucci bags. Even though
the ladies said that they were looking around, the employees were very kind. I thought
it was unfair they way I was treated, just because I did not have an expensive brand
on me.

Guest Speaker: Dietmar Dahmen
Dietmar Dahmen's
presentation was very interesting. He entered the class room with a positive
aura and brought a lot of energy in the class room. To be honest, I had a long
night from my philosophy reading assignments and I expected a short
presentation. Dahmen’s personality kept me awake because of how he connected
towards the students. We were able to relate to things he said about nowism and
firstism. I agreed with him in many ways. For example firstism, everyone wants
to be first to get the new product. The first thing that came to mind was when
the iphone 4S came out last year. People would order the 4S before it came out.
The iphone 4 came out not that long ago and the only difference between the
iphones was Siri. Everyone went crazy and ordered the phones even though they
just got their new iphone 4. It was sold out instantly. This also leads to
where Dahmen talks about how technology has change over the years. The evolution
of phones has change. Before phones were for calling, but as years pass it has
been use for games, paying for bills, and even selling products. It has even
grown to the point where we do not need to text and now command our phones to
do things for us. (Siri)
As he continues, I thought
it was very interesting when he was talking about trust and use-vertising. I
actually laughed a bit because I was able to relate to this. I can’t help but
not use a product until I hear it from others. When I saw the slide of the
makeup guru from youtube, I couldn’t help but smile. I always watch makeup
guru’s reviews before I buy a product. I would not do much research when it
came to my favorite make up guru’s because I “trust” their opinion on the
product. Seeing a magazine ad would not make me want to buy the product
because I do not trust the ad, but hearing it from another person who has used
the product would gain my trust more than the ad from the magazine.
By the end of the class, I
did not know that class ended. I got caught into the presentation that I did
not check the time. Dahmen made me forget about my lack of energy from the
beginning of class. I learned a lot during the presentation and I wanted to
learn more.

How does advertising excites me.
I
never thought that Advertising would be something that I do unconsciously. When
I hear Advertising, I think of commercials, billboards, and etc. I have a habit
of researching products that I think are beneficial for myself. For example,
skin products that will improve your skin. I always wanted to have nice smooth
skin, so I would research what I needed to do to fix ache or dried skin.
Usually, I would come across varies of products and read reviews. Soon it would
lead to one product that I would buy. Likely I would be satisfied with my
product. My habit is telling my friends about a product. If I find out that
they have problematic skin, than I would recommend them the products that I
love. I would explain what the product does and how it will improve their skin.
In my research, I would tell them the background of the products like the ingredients.
The excitement flowing in my body causes me to tell them everything I know
about the product. I never realize that I was doing this until my friends
called me the product girl who makes their wallets cry. They told me that I was
very good at convincing people into buying things. This was the start of my interesting
in Advertising.
